To protect all of the contents from moving around in transit, Home Chef used something that looked like one of those blankets movers use. I looked it up and it’s made from recycled cotton and denim and it’s recyclable, too. There’s a handy page all about recycling in Home Chef’s FAQ if, like me, you want to know what to do with all of the components as you’re unpacking. Not everything has to stay refrigerated , but you may find it easier to just toss everything in the fridge.
These recipes are approved by dietitians and described by Home Chef as “lighter spins on classic favorites.” They’re ideal if you’re looking for healthy or weight-loss options. Home Chef is not, however, an allergen-focused meal delivery service. While you can filter out these ingredients, Home Chef can’t guarantee against cross-contamination. People with particularly severe allergies may want to pass on this service. Each week, you have 25+ meals to choose from. The menu is organized by meal type, including classic meal kits and the Fresh and Easy line.

HelloFresh offers some Easy Cleanup options and Easy Prep recipes that can be prepared in minutes. These options are great, and the service continues to expand them, but it’s yet to reach the variety I see with Home Chef. Customize your daily cooking with easy-to-follow recipes and fresh, preportioned ingredients to make meals you love from the comfort of your kitchen.
Of course, most of the ingredients are provided in your meal kit, but there are some kitchen basics – like olive oil or a baking sheet – that you might need for some recipes. You can also take a look at the full step-by-step recipe for any of the meals, which I think is pretty cool. It makes it easy to gauge whether a recipe is right for your skill level or the amount of prep you’re willing to do. Home Chef usually ships its meat and seafood fresh, but you can store it in the freezer if you aren’t ready to cook it right away.

Everything else comes fresh and should be refrigerated as soon as you receive your shipment. The two contenders are also neck-and-neck in terms of packaging, with different approaches to making their services eco-friendly. Overall, I think HelloFresh does a better job of limiting its use of plastics in its packaging. The packaging is fully recyclable and extensive details can be found on the dedicated Recycling page on the HelloFresh website. Most Home Chef dishes have a variety of "Customize It Options" to tailor your menu to your tastes. HelloFresh's menu makes it easy to see how long each dish takes to prepare.
My box had six ice packs in total – five of which had hard ice in them, and the sixth was still very cold. The proteins were packed separately with extra ice packs, a reassuring feature for food safety. When you go into the individual recipes, you’ll see tons more information. You’ll find details like how difficult the meal is to prepare, how spicy it is, how long it takes to cook, and when you need to cook it. Beyond that, you’ll find extensive nutritional info. There are also a couple of Family Meal recipes each week.

It’s easier than referring back to my phone or laptop – especially when things get messy or cluttered in the kitchen. In terms of packaging, most everything was recyclable or could be reused. The box was cardboard, so no problem there. And I just tossed the ice packs in my freezer to reuse. This was fine for my first order, but if I ordered from Home Chef every week, I definitely wouldn’t have a use for so many ice packs. For this review, I’ll looking at the broadest Home Chef plan, but check out my colleague’s Fresh and Easy review if you’re only interested in that plan.
These options include things like avoiding peanuts or meat. Additionally, keep in mind that meals are not produced in an allergen-free facility. Therefore, Home Chef may not be suitable for those with severe food allergies. Home Chef can be an easy, affordable, and convenient way to enjoy more healthy, home-cooked meals. Plus, Home Chef has its own blog called The Table that acts as an additional resource for consumers interested in meal planning help and recipe ideas.
Notably, the “Customize It” menu rarely includes vegetarian options. When I tried Home Chef, a number of dishes included Impossible Burger as a potential protein, but this no longer appears to be the case. Lastly, you can see which recipes are eligible for Customize It options.

It’s a little tricky to compare Home Chef and HelloFresh in terms of price. Home Chef’s offerings are individually priced, while HelloFresh offers a set price-per-portion. Unlike with Home Chef, HelloFresh’s per-serving price goes down for larger orders. Having said that, HelloFresh and Home Chef both give you the option to exclude certain ingredients or otherwise narrow down your personal menu.
A wintry mix in the morning will transition to mainly rain showers in the afternoon. Periods of rain tapering to showers. Temps nearly steady in the mid 30s. Considerable cloudiness with occasional rain showers. Rain and freezing rain in the morning. Snow showers early with a steadier snow developing late at night.

Home Chef is owned by the supermarket chain Kroger. You can see in my side-by-side comparison above that both are solid meal delivery services aimed at a general audience. Once you begin the subscription process with either service, you’ll notice a few key differences.
Both services allow you the option to include upgraded, gourmet recipes for an additional fee. HelloFresh calls them “Premium Picks,” while Home Chef has the “Culinary Collection.” Whichever alliterative term you use, these features even out. The standard Home Chef meals only require 30 minutes of prep work. However, Home Chef does offer certain types of kits that need even less preparation. For instance, you can order 15 Minute Meal Kits, which are prepped and preportioned for you, requiring only 15 minutes to cook.
Meal kits are the bread and butter of Home Chef’s offerings. These shipments come with recipe cards and all the ingredients needed to bring these dishes to life . With either service, just make sure to make any changes or cancellations before the weekly cut-off date. HelloFresh pulls ahead with its online chat feature that lets you talk with a live employee who can help you immediately with billing or item issues. Home Chef’s customer service is excellent, but the company can take a day or more to get back to you. At times, HelloFresh’s cooking instructions can be vague.
You can also easily pause or cancel your subscription at any time on the company’s website. Rain showers early mixing with snow showers late. Rain and freezing rain early...with rain showers in the afternoon. Cloudy with periods of light freezing rain expected. Periods of light freezing rain in the morning...becoming mostly cloudy.
